My son would love to meet other children like him but it's difficult being a dad trying to find any family who is in my sitution. I am on disability and need help with my son because he requires a great deal of attention and help while playing with others and so far I cannot find help. We cannot afford to have a babysitter come over and besides we would need one who understands autism and that we never found. My wife works all day and there are times she works late and there are times where she is home but working late into the night so you can see why I need help with my son. My son started OT and PT this month so that adds to my work load but I am happy he finally got in. He loves it and is doing well. The ladies who work with him are great and very nice. Not sure if any of you ladies have any idea what I should do but any suggestions I would accept. I just want what is best for my son and for him to enjoy being with like minded children.

To the Dad on disability

If you haven't done so already, phone the Arc of Loudoun County (LARC). Speak with Clarice Dieter Advocacy Coordinator and see if there are any programs you can apply for. We just got a $5,000 grant to help cover speech therapy, as our insurance company has rejected us (turns out they don't cover any "habilitative" services under their HMO plan for those over 2 years - thank you Kaiser). There is also some kind of respite baby sitting you can apply for, and other things out there. Clarice can be reached at 703-777-1939.

My son is 4.5 years and we live in Sterling - if you have any questions or want a playdate sometime, you can reach me at 703-433-1158.

Best of luck, Kathryn

Ms. Kathryn,

Thanks for the information. When I think I have exhausted all revenues to find help I was sent another source to find help. Not sure why it's so difficult to find help when you talk to so many sources. You would think they would give you another source but I am glad you did.
I grew up in Sterling so I know the area well and my parents are still living there. They live behind Sully Elementary and have been there since '78.
My son gets out of pre-school at 11:50 and on some days has OT and other days he has PT. We are trying to get a schedule for Ian but for now we take what the therapist gives us. We waited over two years to get Ian in so I will take what ever days they give me. Ian is a very active boy of almost 4.5 who would love to find a steady playmate. He needs to work on sharing but once he feels comfortable and secure with that person he does fine. So I look forward to arranging a play date with you so our like minded sons can get to know each other.

Dear Daddy BO4,

hope it can help!! We are just starting to set some stuff up as well. My son is also in school until 11:50 - one catch is his younger brother who naps in the afternoons, but also the weekends some time might be good when ever the rain stops! FYI - you can also get a handicap decal for parking with an autism diagnosis - didn't know that until recently - you need to print out the disabled parking placard application form www.dmvnow.com and get your physician to sign off on it. Hey - one small silver lining in all this craziness....;)

Ms. Kathryn,

I hope your mom's day went well. I took my family to my mom who lives in Sterling. My brother was there also with his friend and my son just loves his Uncle's and Nana so we had a great time.
I qualify for the handicap sticker on my own and my doctor told me she would sign the forms but didn't know autism was part of that; again good information to know.
My son has PT tomorrow at 2 and on Tuesday he has OT at 4 and that should be all for that week. My son also takes naps around 1ish depending on how he slept that evening but mostly he doesn't takes naps and prefers to be outside playing. I live in Ashburn off RT. 7 so going to Sterling is no big deal for me or we can meet at a the park on the blvd by the school. Just let me know what is best for you or let me know what the best time to call you so I don't interupt anything. Bernie

Hi Bernie,

the next couple of weeks are a little crazy for us as I've found myself coordinating/designing a butterfly garden installation at my son's elementary school (Countryside) over the next month. There is enough money involved in this that I'm a bit nervous right now - hard to get this done with small children/special needs kids at my apron strings as well, but I'm determined! After this monkey is off my back, let's get together. Calling around dinner is the best bet to getting a hold of me, or you can email me directly at mara_lake@hotmail.com - I usually check it every couple of days. Looking forward to meeting you and your son, and we would love to have you over to our house soon. Saw your OT post - interesting stuff, as the lady I'd hired to come do private speech came over last week for the first time and told me she would rather Dylan do OT first given all his sensory issues - a very different tune than the special ed department at his school is singing who says he has no real problems that social stories can't solve (sigh!)

Take care and TTYS

Kathryn
