Yesterday 9/29/08, my wife and I along with many other parents throughout the Commonwealth tore by this desease made a case in front of the Virginia Assembly hearing for mandated issurrance coverage for Autism. I thought we made good remark at the hearing, but we have to wait and see what is really come out of this...One thing I learned in the hearing is that the parents need to come prepared to testify...ready to share your story would make a huge impact in addition to showing up at the hearing. We also need to be playing the role of the educator in these hearings because, what I observed, the offical seems lack of understanding in Autism and/or Autism's treatment such as ABA. So please do your research and bring facts, quotes, cites, statistics from trusted sources to make your case. Remember, no body else know what your child needs better than you are...you are, in fact, the expert, the messager, the saver of your child and many other children with Autism. The issurrance preps will cast doubts as they argue against the bill; citing it as the educational problem rather than medical problem so they can pass the responsibility to the public school to treat your child. They will argue that the mandated issurrance coverage will drive the cost which causes employers will drop the insurrance coverage. As we all know, the public school can not treat your child, they can help provide your child with special education. But they can not be held responsible for your child's illness. Understandably, they are not the expert to treat Autism. Afterall, you are not paying the public school for your child's health coverage. You are paying the ISSURRANCE for you child 's medical health and it's time for us all to stand up and demand our rights and help save our kids. Thanks.

To Ann: I think Montgomery County has an excellent Autism Program and I have family members who are OTs and special ed teachers in Mont. and I am impressed with what I have heard about their services. If it is working for your son now, I would not change a thing and move to a different County.

I am happy and thrilled to find a "local" site and community that provides valuable and useful information regarding the many degrees of this particular dissorder. I have researched till my hands are numb and sometimes feel lost with all the "misinformation" that is present on the web. I am looking forward to meeting and connecting with others who have similar experiences raising their children and looking for suggestions and advice on how to cope with the day to day living of a child on the Spectrum.

I am thinking of moving to Loundon County and I am looking for information of services offered for Autism and PDD-NOS in the Loundon County Public School System. I currently live in Montomery County and my son is receiving excellent services at a public school fully special ed elementary school learning center. His current class is only 7 children, with one full time teacher and 2 para-educators in the room at all times. His IEP dictates he needs this level of service. Thank you for any information.

Anne
